Neopets (Insider) 2023 Review

Read Time:4 Minute, 2 Second

First of all let me start of by wishing all of you a happy new year! I hope you’ve all had a blast of a new years eve. So yeah, with 2023 being officially over, let us take a look at Neopets and Neopets Insider in the past year. A lot has happened, so buckle up.

We started the year with a new weekly series, this new series was short lived as it abruptly stopped after 5 editions, I’m talking about the Weekly Insider of course.

As I wrote the series I was rather busy with work and school so after missing deadlines repeatedly for the Weekly Insider I put an end to it.

This year however, I am planning on reviving it, expect the first edition of the year to be online this Sunday. Filled with Food club analysis’s, general news of neopets and more.

Another series that died this year and that I intend on reviving is the Neohomes spotlight series, it’s something I enjoy working on a lot and so far it has been received rather well.

Furthermore I hope to turn Neopets Insider into a more generally useful and entertaining fansite by adding new quizzes and new guides to help you enjoy the game more.

Anyway, that’s it for Neopets Insider, now lets turn our heads to neopets itself.

Neopets in 2023

So 2023 was a wild year, it was quite literally a rollercoaster of emotions.

We started the year with yet another disappointing altador cup, in which the Neopets Team didn’t answer any questions about the disastrous and discouraging cup from last year where a team of cheaters took home the trophy.

Only to then be surprised by Neopets former owner Netdragon, selling Neopets to the former developer of the now defunct Neopets Metaverse. This sale left Neopians wary at first as everyone hated the Neopets metaverse and people weren’t to keen on the guy behind that nightmare now owning all of Neopets.

However, eventually it did end up well for a certain amount of time, as the newly formed Neopets Team, now free of its corporate shackles, answered a lot of our questions and started introducing solutions to problems that have been pestering the site for ages. We even got podcasts and AMA sessions where TNT and the new CEO answered a lot of the community’s questions, even the controversial ones about the Altador Cup.

Hell we even got introduced to the concept of Neopets ambassodors, players who would get beta insights into the newest features of the game and would help with creating content for the site. Which given our small but passionate fanbase, resulted in many signups and eventually many people getting salty about not being chosen for the function of Neopets ambassador.

More groundbreakingly TNT introduced the wild concept of daily quests which gave us items as rewards that were previously incredibly rare. Which definitely set the whole economy ablaze but also helped people return to the site.

For a while everything seemed to be fine but then the new owners of Neopets decided to end the year on a bad note by firing a lot of staff members right before the holidays, which didn’t sit well with quite a lot of players, rightfully so as it is a rather dickish move.

But alas, Neopets isn’t exactly financially stable, so they to cut some corners, which brings us to another point of criticism: a lot of new features and content, seemed to involve money. While we understand that Neopets needs to make money in order to continue functioning and in order to keep improving the site with fixes and new content, we also would like more actual fixes and content rather than just new paid features.

So yeah, as of right now the jury still isn’t out on whether Neopets new ownership is a good thing or not. As a Neopian myself I am very glad that Neopets finally isn’t the forgotten and neglected site that it used to be under the stewardship of its former owner Jumpstart/Netdragon. However, I am also still quite skeptical that a crypto bro, responsible for some of the most controversial Neopets drama regarding the Neopets metaverse is now the owner of Neopets.

They’ve made a couple of good changes and a couple of bad ones and buying a financially struggling 24 year old virtual pet site with the promise of fixing problems that have been around for years is quite the challenge, I’ll give them that.

Another factor is the fact that they’ve bought the site like half a year ago, which arguably isn’t enough time to turn things around yet, I just hope that they will keep listening to the community and help us keep alive Neopia, the world we grew up with for yet another 25 years.
